The visibility of a star in the sky depends on its stellar magnitude. Stars with a smaller magnitude are more visible to the naked eye. Stars with a magnitude of fifth and sixth can be seen without any visual aids, whereas larger stars require the use of binoculars or a telescope.

Oleg and I have been in a relationship for 2 years now, and to commemorate this special milestone, we decided to embark on a romantic getaway by the sea. The day was absolutely perfect as we basked under the sun on the sandy shores and indulged in some delectable chocolate fondue. However, as the day progressed, a strong gust of wind unexpectedly swept through, forcing us to seek shelter in a quaint little beachfront cottage that we had rented. Exhausted from the intense heat and the long day, I couldn’t resist the allure of slumber, and soon found myself drifting off to sleep.
I woke up a couple of hours later, but Oleg was nowhere to be found. With the sun setting, I decided to search for him along the beach. To my surprise, I found Oleg arranging candles in the sand, preparing a special surprise for me. We sat together on the chilly sand, marveling at the sea as the moonlight cast beautiful reflections on the water. Suddenly, Oleg pointed towards the stars and pulled out a box from his backpack. Curiosity filled me as I wondered what could be inside, but the reality surpassed all my expectations: Oleg had gifted me a star. We had often fantasized about having our very own star, but I had never thought it would become a reality.
However, the biggest surprise was yet to come: Oleg proposed to me on that night, making it the happiest day of my life. Now, a year later, we are happily married and I will forever cherish the memory of that magical evening.
Lyova entered this world on July 23, marking the commencement of the Leo zodiac sign. My entire existence has revolved around lions in some capacity, as my spouse is also a Leo. Hence, it came as no surprise that my son followed suit. When he was born, I yearned to commemorate the occasion in a special way, yet the conventional gifts such as a hand mold or a silver spoon seemed trivial and insignificant.
The notion of purchasing a star didn’t immediately cross my mind. I had heard about star catalogs and the ability to name a star, but I was uncertain about the legitimacy and assumed it would be exorbitantly expensive. However, my husband convinced me to explore reputable catalogs online, and that’s when I stumbled upon this website. To my delight, the prices turned out to be much more affordable than I had anticipated.
We selected a celestial body – an orange giant situated in the constellation Leo – and gave it the moniker “Puer Lucum”, which translates to “Child of Light”. Now whenever I gaze upwards into the celestial expanse, a grin spreads across my face as I am aware that my son possesses his own personal guiding celestial body.
Ever since Alice enrolled at our school during our ninth grade year, I harbored a clandestine infatuation for her. Her father, a military personnel by occupation, was relocated to our city from a different region. I cannot clarify the reasons or the specifics, but within a mere week, my every thought revolved solely around her.
For over a year, I made a conscious effort to conceal my feelings, clandestinely investigating her Vkontakte profile and attempting to discover her interests. Eventually, I mustered up the courage to ask her out on a date. To my utter delight, she accepted, and from that moment onward, my life underwent a radical transformation, and I finally experienced true happiness. During our third date, I decided to do something out of the ordinary: present her with a star. Granted, I comprehend that owning a star is virtually impossible, but it is feasible to christen a star with a name in a certain stellar catalogue.
Alice beamed with a smile, clearly appreciating the gift. No one had ever bestowed such a unique and thoughtful gesture upon her, and her joy was contagious. In that moment, I too smiled, realizing that even though it may seem like a trivial symbol, for a brief period of time, I was able to bring happiness to my girlfriend. And if you were to inquire about my thoughts on the matter, I would unequivocally state that it was undeniably worth it.
My sibling and I established our very own business and gradually began to make progress in the industry, and now we serve as distributors of electronic merchandise across more than 20 regions in Russia. My mother constantly expressed her belief that my sibling and I possessed our own guiding light, and she never lost hope of raising us to become honorable individuals.
On the occasion of her 65th birthday, I made the decision to present her with a special gift – a star. Throughout my life, I have encountered numerous individuals, both virtuous and less virtuous, but my mother is a true champion. She is among the select few who truly deserve to have their own star in the sky.
For over three decades, our company has been engaged in the production of optical components for binoculars and telescopes. We always strive to acknowledge and celebrate our employees on significant dates and events, and we carefully select gifts for each individual, taking into account their accomplishments, aspirations, and personal attributes.
If you happen to pass by our production building in the evening, you will witness a remarkable sight – a semi-professional four-meter telescope positioned in an open window on the top floor, gazing at the stars. This is where Viktor Yurievich Shaposhnikov, the head of our production shop, works. Not only is he an exceptional manager, but he is also an avid astronomy enthusiast. Victor Yurievich has been an integral part of our team for over 25 years, starting from a humble shop worker and gradually rising to a managerial role through his unwavering dedication, hard work, and extensive expertise. To commemorate Viktor Yurievich’s 50th birthday, our team decided to present him with a truly fitting gift – a star in the constellation Orion.
Dear Victor Yurievich, you are not only our manager, but also a skilled coordinator and visionary, who has brought our close-knit team together as a unified entity. We send you our heartfelt wishes for happiness, success, abundance, a long life, and an enduring presence among us. Happy holiday to you!
I can vividly recall a childhood memory of my sister, Katya, and me engaging in a playful pillow fight, which accidentally resulted in the breaking of a table lamp. In the aftermath, we sought refuge in the closet, while our concerned parents frantically searched for us for over thirty minutes. It was an incredibly amusing experience.
Like any siblings, we had our fair share of fights, but we always stood by each other during the tough times. Now, my sister is 26 and about to tie the knot. When she was 10, she used to daydream about traveling from one star to another in a small spaceship she had seen in a cartoon. Then, when she turned 14, she became quite unbearable, and I would often tease her by calling her “starry-eyed”.
But those days are long gone. We are now the best of friends, and I’ve decided to gift her a star for her wedding. Her life is about to change dramatically, and I hope she never forgets the bond we had as kids.
My two sons were also born on July 5. Yesterday, they turned 30 and have already become successful individuals, each with a career, their own families, and children. They call me almost every day, and I couldn’t have asked for more caring children.
I made the decision to gift them with a double star located in the constellation Gemini. I am confident that naming the star after them was the right choice. After all, we are a united family.
Response: All registrations conducted by “ROSASTRONOMIA” and its partners are legitimate, and all necessary authorizations from state authorities have been obtained!
Only a small fraction of the stars in the sky possess individual names (such as Polaris), while the majority are identified solely by catalog numbers (e.g. HD 7924).
The purpose of the “Name a Star” service is to bestow a melodious name upon a celestial body, a name of your choosing, in honor of a loved one or a company. For example: the star “VICTORIA”, the star of FC “Dynamo”.
The International Star Naming Certificate is an official document that complies with the legislation of the Russian Federation and international laws.
To determine if a registration is available, you have two options:
- You can submit a request on our website in the “Find Your Star” section.
- Alternatively, you can order the printed edition of the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies. This catalog is published multiple times a year and serves as a guarantee of our official activities in Russia!
- You can also verify the availability directly on the international site of the public organization ICHB.ORG.
Get your very own unique International Certificate to confirm the assignment of your chosen name to a celestial body – be it a Star, Comet, or even an entire Galaxy!
The official certificate will include:
- The name you have chosen for the celestial body
- Information of the person you are giving this incredible gift to
- The magnitude, constellation, and coordinates of the celestial body named by you
- The registration number and date in the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies.
Are there still stars waiting to be discovered?
Only a fraction of the countless stars in the night sky have been given official names, with the majority being identified solely by their alphanumeric catalog designations.
While our service does offer the opportunity to search for new, previously undiscovered stars, its true essence lies in allowing individuals to bestow their own unique and melodious names upon celestial bodies.
The international catalog of stars is continually expanding through the scientific research conducted by artificial satellites over the past few decades.
The exploration of uncharted celestial objects remains a crucial endeavor within the field of modern astrophysics.
New stars are celestial objects that experience a sudden increase in their luminosity, ranging from approximately 1,000 to 1,000,000 times brighter. These stars undergo violent explosions, although they do not undergo a rebirth like supernovae. It is estimated that there are around 40 new stars discovered in the Milky Way galaxy each year, but only about 10 are actually observed by astronomers as of the 2000s.
Upon their initial discovery, new stars are typically given a temporary name that indicates the constellation where the outburst occurred and the year, such as “Nova in Swan 1974”.
Afterwards, the new star is assigned an official name and is included in the General Catalog of Variable Stars section of the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies.
Consider the Hubble telescope as an example.
Over the course of 15 years in Earth’s orbit, the “Hubble” has captured an impressive collection of 1,022,000 images of various celestial objects, including stars, nebulae, galaxies, and planets.
Is the sale of star ownership available?
The act of naming a star and the act of buying a star are two completely different things!
If you want to officially name a star, you can do so in accordance with international rules! However, this can only be done through a specialized scientific organization, such as ROSASTRONOMIA. By naming a star through such an organization, scientists and mass media from all over the world will use the name you have chosen for the star in their works, and the information about your chosen name for the star will be forever archived by the state.
On the other hand, it is not possible for any organization in the world to sell stars as private property. Stars are the property of all mankind and cannot be owned by individuals or organizations.
In our operations, we adhere to the UN (United Nations) “Outer Space Treaty”, which stipulates that celestial bodies cannot be claimed as property and are owned collectively by all of humanity.
ROSASTRONOMIA, in collaboration with the International Astronomical Union, explicitly denounces the fraudulent activities of organizations and individuals who do not actually name stars, but rather sell them as property rights (real estate).
As outlined in the Agreement, ROSASTRONOMIA permits the use of marketing phrases such as “buy a star”, “give a star”, etc., but not for the purpose of selling celestial bodies, but rather for the purpose of promoting the process of naming celestial bodies and appearing in search engine results for individuals who are unclear about the specific terminology associated with this process.
It is important to interpret marketing appeals such as “buying a star” in a different light. Rather than taking them literally, they should be seen as an invitation to engage in the process of naming astronomical objects without competition.
One must be cautious not to treat the purchase of a star as a legal ownership that may not hold up under scrutiny. To avoid any potential issues and protect oneself from unscrupulous sellers, we have written a comprehensive article that will guide you in navigating the realm of star sales and ensure your safety!
What factors determine the order amount?
- The registration of a specific celestial body’s name (whether it can be seen by the naked eye or only through a telescope, whether it is an asteroid or an entire galaxy).
- The completion of the registration documents.
- The choice of delivery services (free self-pickup or paid options like courier delivery or delivery by the Russian post).
What factors influence the prices of stars?
The prices for stars can vary depending on the method of observation, such as using a telescope, binoculars, or simply with the naked eye.
The price is also affected by the visibility of the star and the availability of names for other stars. If a star is more visible or if there are fewer stars left without names, the fee for registering a name will be higher. Additionally, the fee is recalculated daily based on the number of similar stars available for naming, taking into account their properties and characteristics (dynamic pricing).
Are discounts combined on promotions?
It is important to keep in mind that only a maximum of two promotional offers can be used simultaneously.
Annual discounts on the website do not have a minimum payment requirement, however, other promotional offers such as promo codes, codes, vouchers, bonus rubles, etc. can be applied to payments of at least 5000 ₽, but not exceeding 20% of the total amount of unpaid orders, taking into account all discounts.
No promotional offers are applicable to orders that are self-picked up.
Delivery and document personalization services (such as translation into another language, logo insertion, font changes, etc.) are billed separately.
The Licensor retains the authority to make the final determination regarding the terms and conditions of the promotional offers as well as the ultimate price to be paid in each specific instance. Should the Licensee (Customer) disagree with this interpretation, the promotional offer will be deemed null and void.
P.S. The information provided is accurate as of August 14, 2023. For the most recent updates, please refer to section 5.6 of the offer or contact your assigned manager via the chat function.

BE ALERT!
SCAMS, FRAUDS, AND EXPLOITATION ARE ON THE RISE
With the advancement of the Internet and social media, there has been a surge in discount and coupon websites claiming to offer “one-day” star naming services. However, it is important to remain cautious as many of these so-called registrars are engaging in deceptive practices. They often lure unsuspecting individuals with low prices or through social media platforms, only to later reveal themselves as:
- Unlicensed scammers who register the same celestial body for multiple people.
- Actors who sell “jokey” certificates without any genuine celestial body names.
- and so on .
Regrettably, it is challenging to comprehend this fact until you submit a verification request for the registration of a celestial object.
We recommend that you safeguard yourself against wasteful expenditure and potential revocation of celestial body names by reaching out to the authorized registrar in your country. The link provided contains a list of official partners in various cities and countries.
We have created a guide for you that will assist you in avoiding falling into the trap set by unscrupulous vendors – Star Registrar Comparison.

In contrast to the long history of Astronomy and the traditions of our ancestors, unfortunately, in modern times, most stars are identified solely by ordinal numbers given to them in specialized catalogs of the celestial sky. This shift occurred due to the introduction of powerful telescopes and observatories, which enabled scientists to discover an overwhelming number of stars. Naming each individual star became a time-consuming and laborious task. As a result, stars are now assigned alphanumeric identifiers based on specific rules outlined in each respective star catalog.
The number of catalogs has increased significantly, with different purposes of observation and different organizations. This has resulted in chaos and a loss of uniformity in identification. Furthermore, the emotional connection associated with these discoveries has been lost, leading to a sense of uniformity and impersonality.
In recent centuries, only a few stars have been given names. For instance, scientists relatively recently named the star in the Keith constellation “Mira” due to its remarkable properties. Similarly, the star in the Centauri constellation was named “Proxima” after it was found to be the closest star to the solar system.
During the 20th century, the interest in designating stars with names among professional astronomers dwindled, with many of them even opposing the practice. This was mainly because they had to observe a large number of stars simultaneously and found it more convenient to use identifiers for these purposes. Unfortunately, the general public was not involved in this process.
However, in recent times, there has been a shift towards popularizing astronomy and making it accessible to the general public. This includes allowing the public to participate in the naming of celestial bodies. This idea has gained support from astronomers all over the world.
It is worth noting that a star can have different identifiers in different catalogs. For example, the star known as “Vega” has various identifiers in catalogs such as a Lyra, 3 Lyra, HD 172167, SAO 67174, PPM 81558, HIP 91262, and so on. This raises the question of whether it is possible to develop a universal system of individual designations for celestial objects.
Assigning public names to cosmic bodies does not negate the assignment of scientific designations. This means that it is not mandatory for everyone to use only the star’s name, as the purpose of designating a celestial body varies for different audiences!
The International Catalog of Celestial Bodies is distributed among the countries that are parties to the intergovernmental Treaty on Space. Each country has its own portion of the database for space objects that do not have a public name. Consequently, the multiple assignment of proper names to the same star is eliminated!
According to the International Astronomical Union (MAC) and the oldest public organization “International Catalog of Celestial Bodies” (ICHB.ORG), if a scientific catalog already exists for an object, a public proper name will not be able to override it. However, the public proper name will be recognized as an appropriate name for the space object and will become public along with the contribution of the proposing organization or individual. This public name will be used globally, either alongside or instead of catalog identifiers, depending on the preference of the organization or person referring to the celestial body. The decision will be based on the accessibility of information for the intended audience of the celestial body review.
The process of registering the name you have chosen for the celestial body is done through the International Scientific Consolidated Astronomical Register. This register, also known as the “International Catalogue of Celestial Bodies,” is part of the unified astronomical information system. By entering the name in the “Public Name” field, it helps to standardize the identification of the space object across various star catalogs. This means that scientific identifiers have a less prominent role in the naming process.
Once you make a reservation, astronomical organizations worldwide will have the opportunity to utilize the Name you have chosen in their scientific research. If a star that is easily visible in the night sky is selected, scientists from all corners of the globe will incorporate its name in their scholarly articles and publications, journalists will reference it in news articles and TV shows, and writers and poets will include it in their novels, poems, and movies. This will allow you to present a gift of immense historical significance, a truly one-of-a-kind gift that will be cherished and passed down through generations – a spiritual symbol carrying a sacred meaning! With this gift, you will forever transform the life of your loved one, as they will have their very own “Guiding” star in the sky, a star that will immortalize your love for centuries to come!
SIMFEROPOL, April 12 – RIA Novosti Crimea. In the past, the expression “to get a star from the sky for your beloved” was only meant figuratively. However, nowadays it has taken on a literal meaning. Numerous commercial companies now offer Russians the opportunity to “purchase” a star and give it their own name or the name of a loved one. A journalist from RIA Novosti Crimea investigated the process of registering a star or planet, the associated costs, the legal validity of naming celestial bodies, and whether there are any astronomical objects in space linked to Crimea.
750 thousand dollars in exchange for a black hole
The internet is filled with various offers, such as the opportunity to name a star. One particular company claims to provide a unique chance to give a gift on a cosmic scale. Their customers can choose a name for a star in honor of their loved ones or relatives and receive a special gift certificate. According to the company, the chosen star name will be officially registered.
Accompanying the written information are pictures of well-known individuals from the cultural and entertainment industries, along with certificates confirming the official naming of celestial objects.
These certificates provide information about the selected name for the star, the details of the person it is named after, the object’s magnitude, constellation, and coordinates, as well as the registration number and date in the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies.
The cost of naming a star of “universal scale” varies depending on its brightness. Naming a 15-magnitude star is relatively cheap, costing just over one thousand rubles, but it can only be seen through space orbital telescopes. Registering the name of a star that can be observed from observatories will cost around 3 thousand rubles. Naming stars observed with professional or amateur telescopes costs between Br4.3 and Br5.6 thousand. Stars that can be seen with more common optical devices like telescopes, professional or army binoculars, range in price from 8 to 41 thousand rubles. These stars typically have a magnitude of 7-10.
If you want to assign a name to an asteroid larger than one kilometer, you will need to allocate Br46 thousand. And if you want to name a star similar to our Sun (yellow, white, red, or brown dwarf star) after yourself or a loved one, it will cost Br170 thousand.
The price for naming stars that are visible to the naked eye starts at Br125 thousand. These stars are of magnitude 6 and can be seen outside of illuminated areas and cities. Naming a star of magnitude 5, which can be seen in suburban areas, costs over half a million rubles, while a star of magnitude 4, visible within city limits, costs over 2 million rubles.
In addition to stars of magnitude 4, the top-tier items on the VIP-gift price list of the “universal scale” include black holes (priced at around 750 thousand rubles) and stars of magnitude 3 (attention: priced at over 83 million rubles!). According to representatives of this company, most stars of magnitude 3 already have names, and the remaining few are “reserved for exceptional individuals of the human race”.
Is it a cosmic reality or just a legal fiction?
Is it truly feasible to designate a star with someone’s name and obtain a legally binding affirmation of this action?
For nearly a century, there has existed an organization known as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) that brings together astronomical communities worldwide, including individual astronomers from 73 nations and over 10,000 members.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is widely acknowledged as the preeminent global institution for addressing astronomical matters that necessitate collaboration and uniformity, including the formal identification of celestial objects and comprehensive information about them. Furthermore, the IAU actively encourages astronomical research and observation in emerging nations.
A publication titled “Purchasing Celestial Bodies and Stellar Designations” appeared on the official website of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) during the late 2000s. The article provided comprehensive clarifications regarding commercial ventures within this realm.
The IAU emphasized that it completely disassociates itself from the commercial practice of selling fictional names of stars or real estate on other planets or moons within the solar system. Additionally, the organization has no involvement with the catalogs of competing companies in any individual countries.
In previous instances, certain companies have misled their clients by falsely asserting that the IAU is connected to, acknowledges, supports, or even collaborates with their business. It is important to clarify that such claims are knowingly untrue and unsupported, as stated by the authors of the article.
Therefore, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is the globally acknowledged institution in charge of designating names for celestial bodies and their surface features. It is important to note that these names are not available for purchase, but rather assigned based on specific guidelines established through deliberation at IAU assemblies. The designations provided by the organization carry weight and are accepted and utilized by astronomers, space agencies, and governing bodies worldwide.
Alla Rostopchina-Shakhovskaya, the director of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (KRAO), provided an explanation in a statement to RIA Novosti Crimea regarding the assignment of names to small planets in the solar system, specifically asteroids. In 1985, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) established a dedicated commission within the organization to oversee the approval of names for minor planets. As per the regulations set by the IAU, the discoverer of a minor planet proposes its name, which is then subject to approval by the commission on behalf of the union. This commission, comprised of astronomers from various parts of the world, is elected for a three-year term.
“The suggested designation must be noticeably distinct from the existing ones, easily readable, and not excessively long. It must not offend anyone’s interests or be considered in poor taste. Names honoring political and military figures may only be adopted a century after their death. The same rule applies to names commemorating military and political events. Names with a clear commercial or advertising intent are not acceptable. A name is only accepted if it receives unanimous approval from all members of the Commission,” the specialist stressed.
Newly detected comets are named after the discoverer’s surname. If the comet is discovered by multiple individuals simultaneously, this will be reflected in its name.
Essentially, the act of bestowing a certificate upon a purchaser, proclaiming the naming of a star or any other heavenly entity, holds no legal weight. Scientists humorously remark that in this scenario, one is essentially obtaining “a costly sheet of paper and a fleeting delight.”
Excluding the armed forces and government officials
The process of officially naming celestial objects not by astronomers who discovered them, but by the general public, still exists. In 2013, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) implemented a procedure that allows individuals or organizations to propose names for stars or planets that have been chosen through a public campaign. They can take part in competitions organized by the IAU and suggest their own name or support a name suggested by others.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has established a set of guidelines for the process of naming celestial objects. These guidelines include the requirement that the new name should not exceed 16 characters, be a single word, be easily pronounceable in multiple languages, not be offensive in any language or culture, and not be similar to an existing name of an astronomical object.
Furthermore, the use of informal or pet names is discouraged, and the name should not have any commercial connotations. Additionally, names associated with politicians, the military, or places connected to political or military activities are not permitted.
"Since December 2017, a total of 313 stars have been given official names. The criteria for naming them are straightforward – the name must reflect either the history of astronomy or humanity as a whole," Rostopchina-Shakhovskaya explained.
The Crimean Connection in the Celestial Sphere
In Crimea, the search for and discovery of minor planets has a rich history spanning over a century, originating from the Simeiz Observatory. Constructed in 1908 on Mount Koshka by Nikolai Maltsov, a prominent landowner near Simeize and a passionate astronomy enthusiast, the observatory was later donated to the Pulkovo Observatory. In 1912, astronomer Grigory Neuimin discovered a small planet, which he named Simeizia (#748). Today, the Simeizia Observatory is a part of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (KRAO) under the Russian Academy of Sciences.

What cannot be purchased online! We have become accustomed to the idea that the internet allows us to buy anything from groceries to real estate. Even a star in the sky. It may seem straightforward: pay for the service and you become the owner of a star. But is it really that simple?
Have you ever pondered about the ownership of the stars? I doubt it. At least, not from the perspective of an earthling. So, why not transform the starry sky into a showcase for sale and offer these celestial luminaries to anyone interested? This ingenious idea has been embraced by enterprising scammers in the startup world and has proven to be quite successful over the years. After all, while mammoths may be extinct, gullible earthlings are here to stay.
If you’re curious about where to purchase a star, simply consult Yandex or Google, as these search engines readily provide a plethora of websites. At the top of these lists, you’ll consistently find the roskocmoc website.
The website offers a unique opportunity for anyone interested in purchasing a star. While they can’t physically remove a star from the sky, they do provide the option to name a star of your choice. To make it official, the company will provide a certificate and register the new star name in the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies.
At first glance, it seems like a one-of-a-kind gift idea: a star for the price of a good bottle of alcohol. It’s unconventional, romantic, and affordable. What could possibly go wrong? Especially since it’s backed by Roscosmos, not some questionable organization.
People are willing to pay for this service (with a limited-time discount, just for today and exclusively for you), hoping to delight a loved one or add a prestigious souvenir to their interior decor. Let’s delve into what they actually receive for their money.
How much does it cost?
What is the price range for purchasing a star named after someone (such as a spouse, grandmother, or beloved pet)? The cost can vary greatly. For a more affordable option, you can purchase a star that can only be observed through a space orbital telescope for just 1,999 rubles. Alternatively, if you are willing to invest significantly, you can buy a certificate for a third magnitude star, which is easily visible from Earth. However, this luxury will come at a price of 449 million rubles.
If purchasing a star doesn’t seem unique enough for you, the seller offers various other options. You can buy comets, nebulae, asteroids, galaxies, and even black holes. There is a wide selection available.
Furthermore, let’s not forget about the incredible discounts! Today only, and exclusively for you, there are discounts ranging from 3% to 80% off.
Roscosmos, a Different Kind of Space Agency
Contrary to what the name might suggest, the website selling stars has no affiliation with the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. It’s important not to be misled by the similar name. The official website of the state corporation uses the exact spelling of “roscosmos” in its address, while this site goes by “roskocmoc”.
However, in the grand scheme of things, this distinction isn’t all that important. Neither Roskocmoc nor Roscosmos have the authority to name celestial bodies. That responsibility lies with the International Astronomical Union (IAU), established in 1919 and consisting of 73 member states. The IAU is the governing body that assigns names or numerical codes to stars.
What exactly is being sold on this website?
Let’s assume that none of the aforementioned is daunting to you, and you are resolute in purchasing a star of your choosing. What will you receive in exchange for your thousands (or millions) of rubles?
- A certificate. A beautifully crafted document with the purchaser’s name, the star’s name, and its coordinates.
- An entry in the International Catalog of Celestial Bodies (which is printed in the same establishment). And, if desired, a copy of the catalog itself.
A touch of monotony in the text
Down at the very bottom of the screen, you may come across a discreet line labeled as the “User Agreement.” This seemingly unremarkable 44-page document offers a detailed explanation of the legal aspects surrounding your purchase, albeit in small-sized font.
The Licensor hereby grants the Customer the authority to utilize a specific component of the intellectual property item (hereinafter referred to as the Consolidated Scientific Astronomical Register of Cosmic Bodies and Objects of Natural Origin of the International Catalogue of Celestial Bodies, DB) in accordance with the Certificate of State Registration for the copyright-protected database, bearing the number RU 2017620158, titled “International Catalogue of Celestial Bodies.”
Patentinform has a record about the database being registered by an LLC called “MKS” (these guys really like fancy names). Essentially, the LLC has registered the database and now offers permissions to access it to anyone interested. This is a profitable venture!
But what about Kirkorov?
“Roskokmok” takes advantage of potential buyers’ weaknesses by displaying photos of popular celebrities on their website. These celebrities can be seen smiling and holding certificates in their hands. Some of the celebrities featured include Philip Kirkorov, Sergey Lazarev, Vera Brezhneva, Anfisa Chekhova, and Dima Bilan….
It is undeniable that certain celebrities could afford to make such a purchase, but the particular images on the website are simply edited using photoshop. By conducting a google image search, you can easily find the authentic ones within a matter of seconds.
Exercise caution!
Prior to conducting any online transactions, inquire about feedback on external platforms, thoroughly review all fine print, and make a well-considered choice. Otherwise, you run the risk of wasting a significant amount of money on an unknown entity.
Want to give a truly unique gift? Consider giving a star from the sky as a present. The act of giving a star can be the most romantic gesture a guy can make for his girlfriend. However, stars can also be given to other people, such as your boss, friend, or even as a wedding gift for young couples. So, how can you buy a star as a gift? Read on to find out!
Which celestial objects in the heavens possess designated names?
There have been around 300 stars that have received names dating back to ancient times. These traditional names are primarily of Arabic origin. In the 17th century, a renowned astronomer named Bayer introduced a labeling system for stars using letters.
However, in some cases, Greek letters were insufficient, and Latin letters were introduced. Yet, even with the use of two alphabets, it is still not enough in the modern world. Astronomer John Flemsteed assigned numbers and names to stars, with the numbering being done in ascending order of the star’s ascension. This naming system for stars was named after this scientist.
Did you know that stars are currently named according to the Flemsteed system?
Can you give a star a name as a present?
A star is a celestial object that emits its own light and can be observed from Earth without the need for any optical aids. It is remarkable that the naked eye is capable of discerning approximately 5,000 distinct stars in the night sky, although the actual number is in the hundreds of billions. These stars are classified based on their brightness, with notable examples being the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper, each with its own unique luminosity. The brightest star in the Big Dipper constellation is known as Polaris.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to give a star an official name. Private organizations that offer star naming services and provide corresponding certificates do not have any affiliation with the International Astronomical Union, the scientific community, or any governmental authority. However, there may be occasional exceptions to this general rule.
As an example, Barnard’s star is given its name in recognition of the accomplishments of American astronomer Emerson Barnard. Throughout his lifetime, Barnard made numerous significant discoveries, with one of the most notable being the identification of this particular star in 1916. What sets this celestial body apart is its remarkable high angular velocity in relation to the celestial sphere.
IMPORTANT: It is worth noting that all individuals after whom stars are named have made substantial contributions to the field of science. No official certificates or documents are necessary to validate this event, as their star is a gift from the heavens itself.
Another fascinating star is the star of Cervantes. In 2015, the International Astronomical Union conducted a competition to increase public interest in science, allowing astronomers to propose names for stars and planets. The general public had the opportunity to vote for their favorite names among the submissions.
In December of that year, a decision was made to bestow the name of Cervantes upon a star that closely resembled the sun. Furthermore, as there were a total of four planets orbiting this star, they were each given the names of the esteemed characters from his renowned novel: Rocinante, Sancho, Don Quixote, and Dulcinea.
IMPORTANT NOTE! While the actual name of the star may be different, you will receive an official certificate bearing your chosen name. Thus, rest assured that you are symbolically claiming a star and presenting the gift of the heavens to your beloved.
When it comes to purchasing a gift, half the battle is finding the perfect present. However, it’s also important to consider how you will present it. The possibilities are endless and limited only by your imagination. You could reserve a table at a fancy restaurant or plan a romantic picnic to watch the sunrise. Alternatively, you could opt for a simple gesture such as bringing coffee to bed in the early morning to bring joy to the recipient. The choice of gift presentation will also depend on who you are giving it to.
IMPORTANT! If the gift is intended for your boss or manager, it’s best to choose a design that is formal and professional, avoiding any unnecessary familiarity. On the other hand, for family members, a more personal and intimate setting would be appropriate.
What other celestial gifts can you give for a birthday?
In addition to a star, you can also present your loved one with an asteroid or a parcel of land on a different planet. This will undoubtedly make for a unique and extraordinary gift. After all, not everyone can claim to possess lunar real estate or their very own personal asteroid.
Gifting an original present is always enjoyable and satisfying. And it’s even more thrilling to receive. Particularly if this gift hails from beyond our world. We trust that our article has provided you with clarity on many matters. We wish you a delightful and celestial shopping experience.
