The story of the Star of Bethlehem, also known as the Christmas Star, is recounted in the Bible. According to the holy book, three wise men who were stargazers were inspired by the star to travel from the eastern lands to Palestine in order to see baby Jesus. This same tale is also found in Matthew’s Gospel, where he describes how the wise men, known as the Magi, approached Herod, the ruler of Judea. They asked him for directions to the one who was born as the “king of the Jews” and explained that they had seen a bright star in the sky, which led them to the city where the newborn Christ was. Their intention was to worship him.
In modern times, astronomers have attempted to calculate and determine the nature of this cosmic event. They have questioned whether it was an actual astronomical phenomenon or simply a work of fiction.
Furthermore, well in advance of him, ancient Chinese and Korean astronomers documented a luminous celestial body and offered their conjectures. According to their historical accounts, this extraordinary cosmic occurrence, possibly a supernova, materialized in the heavens circa 5 BC and endured for over sixty days.
In response, Professor Patrick Hartigan from Rice University (located in Houston, Texas) posited that a number of his peers propose the possibility that this event may have been nothing more than an exceptionally large and radiant comet.
Kepler’s Hypothesis
The writings of German astronomer Johannes Kepler contain a wealth of information regarding this rare and magnificent occurrence. In a work dating back to 1614, he posited that the Star of Bethlehem, which is vividly described in the Bible, could possibly be the result of the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. Contemporary astronomers propose that the biblical wise men from the Christmas story may have witnessed a triple conjunction of planets in the sky: Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus.
Although the observed astronomical event in 2020 will not include Venus, it will still be a breathtaking spectacle. The best vantage point to marvel at it will be near the equator.

The alignment of Jupiter and Saturn is an extremely rare phenomenon. This event occurs approximately once every twenty years. The last time these two planets came close to each other was in the year 1226 at dawn. According to calculations made by astronomers, the next time Jupiter and Saturn will be at a similar distance from each other, like they will be this Christmas, will be on March 15, 2080. During that time, they will also be visible in the sky at a higher position above the horizon and for a longer duration. It is not expected for another conjunction of these two celestial bodies to occur until the year 2400.
Hartigan mentioned that even though the conjunction of the two planets might give the illusion of a single star, their actual distance from each other would be millions of kilometers apart. To put it into perspective, Jupiter will be about 5 astronomical units away from Earth, while Saturn will be 10 astronomical units away. An astronomical unit is defined as the distance from us to the Sun.

Georgy Goncharov, a senior researcher at the Pulkovo Observatory, has also confirmed Professor Hartigan’s statements and reminded Russians that the optimal location to observe the phenomenon of planetary conjunction is in equatorial countries.
